About

The Spatial Ops Index is a rating system designed to evaluate and recognise excellence in XR experiences. It provides a structured, expert-driven assessment of how engaging and effective an XR project is, across key dimensions of spatial computing. Each assessment is handled by various members of our panel, with a background in eduction, simulation design and programming.

Why the Spatial Ops Index Matters

Sets a Benchmark – Helps define what makes an effective, industry-leading XR experience.

Supports Studios & Creators – Provides valuable feedback and visibility for projects.

Informs Investors & Decision Makers – Assists in funding, adoption, and integration of XR solutions.

Drives XR Innovation – Encourages the industry to push for higher standards in impactful projects, experiences and rollouts.

The Rating System: 1-3 Stars

Experiences are awarded between one to three stars, reflecting their overall impact, execution, and industry significance:

★★★ – Exceptional, Industry-Defining

A groundbreaking experience that pushes the boundaries of XR innovation. Sets a new standard for immersion, interactivity, and engagement.

★★ – Highly Recommended, but Not Groundbreaking

A strong, well-executed XR project that demonstrates great design and engagement but may not introduce transformative innovation.

★ – Worth Experiencing, but Has Flaws

A promising experience with merit but suffers from limitations in execution, usability, or reloadability value.

The Six Areas of the Spatial Ops Index

Each experience is assessed across six core pillars, which together define what makes a high-quality XR project:

1. Immersion

• How deeply does the user feel present in the experience?

• Does it feature high-quality environmental design, sensory fidelity, and embodiment?

• Does the XR world feel believable and engaging?

2. Interactivity

• Does the user have meaningful control over the experience?

• Are interactions intuitive, fluid, and natural?

• Is the user’s agency respected, or is the experience mostly passive?

3. Cognitive Ignition

• Does the experience challenge the user’s thinking, skills, or decision-making?

• Does it promote learning, retention, or behavioral change?

• Is the mental engagement deep and lasting?

4. Spatial Communication

• Does the experience use 3D space effectively for storytelling, training, or gameplay?

• How well does it leverage movement, positioning, and spatial audio?

• Does it allow users to navigate, explore, or understand space naturally?

5. Gamification

• Are there game-like elements (challenges, progression, feedback loops)?

• Is the experience motivating and engaging over time?

• How well does it use intrinsic rewards to drive participation?

6. Reloadability

• Does the experience have long-term replay value?

• Can it adapt or scale over time?

• Will users return to it multiple times for new insights or enjoyment?
